Solar Boat Challenge
As a continuation of the sustainability program through every year level at New Gisborne Primary School, students in Year 6 investigate, design, build and evaluate boats made from recyclable materials. The boats are solar powered with students investigating the differences in hull design (balance, weight, alignment and plane), circuit construction and power production differences between series and parallel circuits.
Students are then required to collate and compare time data of their boats in different conditions before racing either against their peers at New Gisborne or surrounding schools. Boats which are successful in these events then have the opportunity to race at Scienceworks against schools from across the state in their annual event.
